“Working as an intern in OYLM was a pleasant experience.”

I was placed in the QAQC department reporting to the QA executive. I was given plenty of opportunities to take part in QA tasks, like product discussion, validation, material inspection, manufacturing process verification as well as meeting suppliers. Besides that, I was also given the chance to work with the R&D engineers in gaining more knowledge in the technical aspects for the related product model. It was certainly a good exposure in the real industry either in QAQC or R&D, as plenty of learning opportunities were given at work.
The organization has a good working environment and the offices and laboratories have pleasant layout to perform tasks given. It has a dedicated department to ensure a healthy and safe working environment. Employees of the organization practice affable culture at work, and are very willing to help and teach newcomers. Every employee embraces positive work attitude, hence pleasurable atmosphere can be expected.

I highly recommend students in related fields to enrol in the internship program in OYLM. It is a good place for real industry exposure. I personally love to work in the organization.

"On my first day at OYL, I arrived at the doorstep of HR with trepidation."

My Experience at OYLM

Before starting my industrial training at OYLM, I had the fear that I am not the type suitable for working in an organization; what more a well established company like OYLM. The fact that OYLM is part of Daikin, the world’s second biggest air-conditioner manufacturing company made my 3 month industrial training look even more daunting. On my first day at OYLM, I arrived at the doorstep of HR with trepidation. I wondered if the people here would be able to accept me into their work environment. However, as soon as I started meeting the various people here, there was a sense of welcoming that wiped away all of my concerns.

I started out my industrial training with an orientation program. The orientation program familiarizes me with the company background and policies. After that, I had to go through the ‘Life as an operator’ program, where I had to spend 3 days at the assembly line. During this program, I learned a great deal of how air-conditioners were actually manufactured. I had to thank Mr. Chong Chun Hao for taking care of me and also teaching me a great deal about the production line. Aside from that, the supervisors, foremen, and even the humble operators were extremely supportive and helpful. Even though my handyman skills were quite bad, they still let me try out various tasks in the production line. They never take me as a liability and were even generous with sharing their knowledge. Even though 3 days in the production line was brief, it was nevertheless an unforgettable experience.

After the "Life as an operator program", I was assigned to the Human Resources Department for the rest of my industrial training program. In the HR Department, I was under the supervision and guidance of Mr. Toh Chiew Kian. Meeting him was a pleasant surprise to me as he was not your stereotype ‘boss’. He is far more approachable than I anticipated and is also very concerned about my well being at OYLM. The other staff of HR are also just as friendly and helpful. They always try to make me feel comfortable with the working environment at HR Department.

I have been assigned to 2 projects during my time at HR. They are the skill shop improvement and developing the YEP training module. When I first received these projects I was unsure if I was up to the task. Fortunately, I had all the support I could get. While I was doing projects, I had to ask for help from the Training and Development crew, the document officer in QC, line executives, production engineers, the sales and distribution department and many more. It is safe to say that they were all very helpful and friendly. Never did they turned me down despite how busy they were with their jobs. Although I had faced some difficulties in the project, the help and support I received allowed me to successfully complete my projects.

During the 3 months at OYLM, I noticed that OYLM practices a lot of elements borrowed from Japanese work culture. Among them are: strict adherence to punctuality, heavy emphasis on quality and safety and systematic organizing such as 5S. All of these elements reinforce the fact that OYLM is an organization of multinational standard. Even some of the manufacturing methods that were used here were introduced by Daikin. I have studied some of the Japanese manufacturing methods, but seeing them being applied in real life gives me a better understanding about them.

Having my industrial training at OYLM is surely a beneficial experience for me. The 3 months I was here has exposed me to a lot of things. Not only did I acquire the technical knowledge of the industry, I had also learnt a good number of soft skills and life skills that can’t be learnt in class. Apart from that, I made many new friends here. However, more importantly for me, working in OYLM has diminished my fears of working in an organization. I now feel more ready to step into working life.

"I have a bad experience with my previous company. I thought the sun was gone."

"When I was about to start my internship program at OYLM, I had a bad experience with my previous company. I thought the sun was gone. But my internship program in OYLM changed all that! The internship experience at this organization was delightful and eye-opening because OYLM is a very well established organization within Daikin Industries Ltd of Japan. Throughout the internship program, I was given opportunities to apply the theories I had learned in classroom such as assisting in projects while at the same time gaining real working experience as an engineer. As such, my experiences not only helped me in understanding how theories work but also how it strengthened my knowledge base."

“OYL R&D cares for everyone.” It was in May 2009 that I started my internship in OYL R&D. Knowing that OYLM is a well established company in manufacturing air conditioning devices, it made me feel extremely nervous before the internship started. Will I be able to adapt myself among the engineering experts in OYL R&D? Will I be able to survive my internship without causing any trouble to them? Question like these had been running in my mind. However, all the worries I had were wiped away on the very first day when I entered OYL R&D.

People in OYL R&D are very helpful. I received good supervision from my supervisor, Mr. Eric Phan Tze Wei, as I started to learn and adapt myself to the environment. People in OYL R&D are willing to provide guidance, help and suggestion whenever an intern needs it. Having my internship under Fan and Motor division in OYL R&D, my duty was mainly to run air flow test, motor qualification test, and drop test. The theories and principles can be learnt easily by performing the tests and by reading the testing procedures or work instructions.

OYL R&D cares for everyone. Everyone who works in OYL R&D, including interns, will be provided with uniforms, caps and safety shoes. The clinic is available for those who need any medical attention. A Cafeteria is available and the food is sold at reasonable price. From time to time, there will be activities such as sports competition and safety campaigns organized to increase the awareness of employees towards health and safety.

In OYL R&D, I stand a chance to meet with people with different job scopes. By interacting with them, I managed to get an idea of what kind of job suits me better in my future. I am glad that I had chosen to have my internship in OYL R&D. I had gained much knowledge in various aspects which are very helpful to my study and future career. Although 10 weeks of internship had finally come to an end, the relation with my colleagues continues. We still keep in touch and whenever I face any problems in my study, they are there to provide me with help and guidance.

“Never in my university life have I learnt so much practical knowledge, team work and lessons in life.”

8 Months at OYL R&D
8 months! There is a saying that time is gold. How would one be able to utilize these 8 months, is an issue that is of extreme importance. Indeed, this is the period of time I was being observed as a trainee at OYL R&D. Prior to my training at OYL R&D, I had absolutely no working experience and therefore it came as a culture shock for me when I arrived here. I had no understanding of any work culture, what more Japanese working culture, which is rigorously practiced at OYL R&D. Fortunately, the orientation program helped to set my mood right and allowed me to understand the operations of OYL R&D.

After the orientation program, every trainee was allocated to his or her own designated department. I was assigned to the Research and Application department. The training program at OYL R&D is project-based, and trainees are expected to come up with something meaningful and useful to the company at the end of the training period. It was a challenge as I had no idea of the projects given to me. Suddenly, my enthusiasm seemed to have been put off at this point.

But I was fortunate to have supportive supervisors and mentors in the form of Mr. Chin Wai Meng, Mr. Thoo Kok Keong, Mr. Teoh Kuang Yee and Ms. Poh Hong Hong. They constantly pumped me with the confidence and knowledge that I require to complete these projects. The other engineers in this department were also supportive and provided me valuable insights into the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry. I picked up the momentum and slowly but surely, became accustomed to the working lifestyle here, thanks to the supportive engineers of this department. Such a friendly and supportive working environment was also applicable to other departments, based on the feedback I obtained from other trainees.

Throughout the 8 months at OYL R&D, I have also observed that OYL R&D practices a strict adherence to time and punctuality, which I believe stems from the Japanese working culture infused here. These, together with 5S activities, helped all OYL R&D employees to be more organized and disciplined in their work. Inter-department relationships were evident, for instance, the newly developed air conditioners under the Design group’s belt are given the rough treatment to see the extent of conditions they can be operated at. The Research and Application group also aids in research that work which can bring further improvements to the products, as well as producing many quality in-house application software that increases the design efficiency of the design engineers in other departments. Such a relationship forms the nucleus of OYL R&D and with this the future development and prospects of the company are limitless.

I have to say that being trained in OYL R&D is indeed a great eye opener for me. Never in my university life have I learnt so much practical knowledge, team work and lessons in life. At OYL R&D I had the privilege to obtain such valuable experiences. More importantly, I get to know a bunch of great and dedicated people here. On a last note, great thanks to OYL R&D for a great 8 months!
