‘Due to my job nature, I have all the opportunities to travel around the world to conduct training or assist in solving technical problems.’
I started my career in OYLM in 2003 as a service engineer attached to the Marketing Department. My job responsibility at the time was to provide technical support to customers to solve product quality/technical issues and conduct product training for customers and internal staff.
As OYLM is an air conditioning manufacturer with business operations in almost every corner of the world, I have the opportunity to travel to different countries to conduct training or to assist in solving technical problems. As a service engineer, my biggest challenge is to ensure total customer satisfaction. Complaints can sometimes be frustrating to handle, but somehow I have managed them well. In the end, I have gained much experience, and built up my level of confidence in my job.
The year 2009 was a turning point in my life as I accepted another challenge by joining the sales team after 5 years in the Service department. Sales is truly a different world. I am glad that the management gave me this opportunity to advance myself to another level and contribute to the company in different ways.
Together with Daikin, the company wants to achieve the world number one position in the air conditioning business. This is a huge vision, and I want to be part of it.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy… at OYL R&D Centre, work and play goes hand in hand!"
• About the company
OYL R&D Centre is a very unique company because it is located next to its sister company, OYLM. It is also unique because it is a knowledge-based company. As the name suggests, the core business is research and development; hence the products of this company are engineering drawings and bills of materials for air-conditioning products that are used by OYLM for mass production.
• About the job
Being a knowledge-based company, the job indeed challenges the mind. There is not one day that is the same because our job requires us to be creative, to challenge ourselves and to change for the better. This kind of job does not come without disappointments where out of ten tests carried out, there may be only one success. To achieve success, we have to get our hands dirty and dig into all possible resources to explain the fundamental mechanisms.
• The working environment & relationship
If a visitor from a foreign country were to visit OYL R&D Centre, without knowing that it is a commercial organization, he would think that it is an academic institution. This is simply because the majority of the staff are between the age of 24 to 32. The only senior staff are those in the managerial positions. This is due to the rapid expansion of the company in recent years which saw a dramatic increase of engineers and technicians in a short period of time. Hence, fresh graduates adapt easily to the working environment, not only because it is easy to find friends, but also because the work involves research in libraries, building prototypes in workshops, experiments in laboratories, and compilation of analysis reports, which differ not much from the universities they graduated from. The only difference is that the results materialize into the marketplace and if done well, job satisfaction can be very rewarding

"Managing people is much more challenging than purely providing technical support."
I graduated in 2001 from University of Malaya and joined OYLM the same year.
My first position was at OYL R&D Centre in Sg Buloh. The position offered to me was R&D Engineer for Residential Product Group. My job scope was to develop new products as per market requirements within a challenging time frame and cost structure. Meanwhile, I had to support the manufacturing section to solve customer complaints, cost reduction activities, productivity improvement process (Kaizen) and vendor quality issues.
To introduce new features into our products, my task is to evaluate new technology and its integration into future products. I also had to study air filtration products (negative ionizer, nano based filter, active type filtration), miniature water pump, oxygen supply device, and many more.
My job satisfaction is huge because I can see the product I developed introduced into the market with wide acceptance.
Working in OYL R&D is definitely challenging. This is a very good place to build fundamental knowledge and enhance working skills. Employees in this company are friendly and helpful. I meet not only colleagues but friends here.
OYLM was once a subsidiary of Hong Leong Group and Daikin from Japan acquired it in 2006. It was shocking news to every OYLM employee. Everybody then wondered what would happen after this acquisition? However, their worries are unfounded. Daikin had executed a very good policy by integrating the best culture from both companies to create a new culture. The synergy process has since continued.
It was due to this synergy process, that I was fortunate to be one of those selected to undergo a series of training in Japan for one year. During this period in Japan, I worked along side Daikin employees to develop a very important strategic product. However, due to the production of this product in China, I had to move my training to China to continue the development. I had to admit that the interactions between 2 cultures are fascinating. This had been the most unforgettable working experience that I had ever gained.
Throughout the year, my role had slowly shifted from technical management to management of people, and project management. Managing people is much more challenging than purely providing technical support. Working in OYLM allows me to look forward to this new challenge.
